The Illusion of Being a ‘Good Person’

Many people believe that being a “good person” guarantees eternal life. They point to their kindness, generosity, or moral choices and feel confident that God will accept them. But the Bible teaches otherwise.

In Mark 10:18, Jesus said, “There is none good but One, that is, God.” That statement dismantles the belief that human goodness alone can secure our salvation. It reminds us that we are judged not by our own standards, but by God’s perfect holiness.

So many walk through life thinking, “I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t cheat, I don’t kill, I help others.” Yet the truth is, all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Even our best efforts are like “filthy rags” compared to His righteousness (Isaiah 64:6).

This illusion of goodness creates spiritual blindness. It gives people a false sense of security and keeps them from recognizing their need for redemption. Only faith in Jesus Christ and surrender to His lordship can bring salvation—not our good deeds.

Let this be a call to examine ourselves honestly. Are we trusting in our own goodness or in the saving grace of Christ?
